The world’s largest online video on demand service, Netflix is all set to debut in India, The Business Line reports. The video streaming giant is expected to make the announcement at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2016. The event will kick off from January 6 to January 9 in Las Vegas. However, there is no official word from the company about the official announcement of the service hitting the Indian shores.
Netflix’s India launch has been in the news since June last year. What seems to have captured Netflix’s attention in Indian market now is the 4G market expansion. According to reports, the video streaming giant is said to enter India in partnership with few local telecom firms to take benefit of the 4G services. As of now Airtel has its 4G network and Reliance Jio has rolled out its network, but it is for employees only.
If reports are to be believed, Netflix’s foray in the Indian market will not only bring more video but better technology and that to at an affordable cost. The service is already popular in over 50 countries with around 62 million subscribers.
Currently in India we have the Singapore-based Hooq, which was launched in India for Rs 199 per month. Hotstar was also launched early 2015, which is a mobile app for on-the-go TV content streaming. Ogle, Big Flix, Ditto TV and Spuul that offer video-on-demand services to Indian users and can prove to be tough competition for Netflix once it enters India.
